ADSS DDD Travel Bursary
The Association for the Study of Death and Society’s biennial conference – Death, Dying, and Disposal (‘DDD’) – is a leading event in the international field of death studies. The conference provides delegates with a valuable opportunity to present research to an interested, expert audience, and to expand their personal research networks.
In view of the important role played by the DDD conference in the field of death studies, the underrepresentation of Australian-focused death studies in this field, and the significant financial outlay required of Australian death studies scholars to attend an international conference, the ADSS has established a DDD travel bursary.
One bursary is available to the value of AUD$1,000, payable directly to the successful applicant upon award.
To be eligible, applicants must, at the time of application:
Be a paid-up member of the ADSS, and
Have a paper (or roundtable or panel) accepted by DDD, and
Be attending DDD in person (that is, the bursary will not be awarded for online attendance).
Priority will be given:
First, to PhD students, Early Career Researchers, independent scholars, and those in precarious academic employment who have no institutional funding available to attend DDD;
Second, to PhD students, Early Career Researchers, independent scholars, and those in precarious academic employment;
Third, to permanently employed academics who have no institutional funding available to attend DDD; and
Fourth, to all other applicants.
To apply, please email a brief (300 word) statement setting out the expected academic benefit you will receive as a result of attending DDD, and why, in your opinion, your application for the bursary should be prioritised, to info@deathstudies.org. Please also include evidence of acceptance of your abstract (or roundtable or panel) at DDD, and your intent to attend the conference in person. Application material must be received by 31 May in the relevant conference year for consideration.
The successful applicant will be required to provide a brief written report to the ADSS by 31 October following the conference outlining their experiences at DDD and describing how the bursary helped facilitate their attendance at the conference. If the successful applicant does not attend DDD, or attends the conference online from Australia, the ADSS reserves the right to require the return of the bursary funds.
